St Michael Catholic Cemetery in Sioux Falls SD is seeking a full-time Groundskeeper.
Position Summary
The Cemetery Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the beauty, safety, and reverence of the cemetery grounds. The position supports the mission of the Catholic Church by ensuring that the cemetery remains a place of dignity, prayer, and respect for the deceased and their families. Duties include grounds maintenance, preparation of burial sites, and assistance with cemetery operations in a manner consistent with Catholic values and practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform routine grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, planting, watering, pruning, leaf removal, and snow removal as needed.
Prepare burial sites, including locating graves, digging and closing graves, and setting markers and monuments in accordance with cemetery policy.
Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment in safe and operable condition; report needed repairs promptly.
Ensure the cemetery grounds are kept clean, orderly, and safe for visitors and staff.
Assist with the placement and removal of decorations and seasonal displays.
Support funeral and interment services by setting up chairs, tents, and other necessary equipment; provide respectful assistance to clergy and families during services.
Follow all safety and OSHA regulations and adhere to diocesan and parish safety policies.
Maintain accurate work logs and report completed tasks to the Cemetery Manager.
Perform other duties as assigned to support cemetery operations.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Prior groundskeeping, landscaping, or maintenance experience preferred.
Ability to operate and maintain power tools, small machinery, and heavy equipment (e.g., mowers, backhoes, trimmers).
Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 75 lbs., bending, and working in all weather conditions.
Demonstrated reliability, integrity, and respect for the sacred nature of cemetery work.
Must have or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of Catholic burial customs helpful but not required (training provided).
