Position Summary: The Retail Pharmacist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care within the outpatient retail setting, ensuring safe, accurate, and patient-centered medication dispensing. This role supports the Pharmacist-in-Charge by reviewing prescriptions, verifying dosing and clinical appropriateness, counseling patients, and overseeing daily operational workflows. Working collaboratively with pharmacy technicians, providers, and other healthcare team members, the Retail Pharmacist promotes clear communication, medication safety, and consistent service quality. This position functions within a supportive, team-oriented environment and upholds all state and federal regulatory standards while maintaining medication integrity. In the absence of the Pharmacist-in-Charge, the Retail Pharmacist assumes responsibility for supervising retail pharmacy operations to ensure continuity of high-quality service.
Key Responsibilities: - Review and dispense prescriptions in accordance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and established Trinity Health pharmacy policies.
- Counsel patients on medication use, potential side effects, interactions, and appropriate storage to support safe and informed therapy.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within pharmacy systems, ensuring proper processing, labeling, and record retention.
- Collaborate with prescribers and healthcare staff to resolve medication-related issues, clarify orders, and support continuity of care.
- Monitor inventory levels, medication integrity, and workflow efficiency; assist with daily operational oversight and supervise staff when designated.
- Promote a customer focused environment by providing courteous, responsive service and addressing patient questions or concerns with professionalism and clarity.
Licenses and Certifications Required: - Entry level degree in Pharmacy as specified by the North Dakota Board of Pharmacy.
- Current Pharmacist license in good standing with the State of North Dakota.
- Adequate amount of continued education to satisfy North Dakota Board of Pharmacy requirements.
Educational Requirements: - As specified by the Board of Pharmacy to attain licensure and maintain licensure.
Experience Requirements: - Retail experience preferred.
- Excellent customer service and team skills for interaction with Pharmacy personnel, medical personnel and patients.
- Experience using computerized system for information utilization, storage and retrieval required.
Special Skills or Training Requirements: - The ability to access, enter, and retrieve information from Pharmacy computer systems.
- This position requires professional courteous relationships with medical staff, supportive staff, and patients.
- Strong communication skills to include accurately record information and disseminate data through all communication channels, effectively express thoughts, concepts and directions through written and oral media, and maintain active customer communications throughout the day in a clear and concise manner.
- Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Physical Requirements: The Retail Pharmacist is frequently required to stand for extended periods while preparing, dispensing, and reviewing medications. The role involves repetitive hand movements, reaching for supplies, and the ability to lift or carry light to moderate pharmacy items such as medication totes or boxes. Adequate vision, hearing, and communication abilities are essential for safely interpreting prescriptions, operating computer systems, and counseling patients.
Environmental Requirements: Work is performed in a retail pharmacy environment with regular exposure to medication storage areas, prescription-filling equipment, and frequent customer interactions. The role may encounter moderate noise levels, interruptions, and periods of high activity, especially during peak patient volume hours. Strict adherence to safety, infection-prevention, and confidentiality protocols is required to maintain regulatory compliance and protect patient information.
