Underground Utilities Representative

Full time position: 40-50 hours per week

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Salary range of $32 to $36 per hour

Working Hours

Monday-Friday week Hours 7:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. or 6:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. (May vary according to work)

Occasional Saturdays on an as needed basis

Reports to Survey Manager

Job Summary: The Underground Utilities Representative is responsible for coordinating, managing, and ensuring the safe and accurate location of underground utilities on active construction projects. This role requires extensive knowledge of underground utilities—including water, sewer, electrical, and communication lines—and involves daily coordination with contractors, utility crews, and other trades. The representative will lead dig permit processes, manage utility locate operations, and enforce compliance with all safety and permitting requirements.

Responsibilities:

Project & Utility Coordination:

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for all utility locate requests; respond promptly to calls, texts and emails

  • Works closely with General Contractors, Superintendents and other trades to coordinate daily and upcoming construction activities

    • Meet with contractors to review current workday permits

    • Assign permits to survey crew chiefs and review/update of live utility map and review for as-builts needed

    • Guage crews’ capability and hold them accountable to follow and enforce the dig permit process

  • Dig Walks with Contractors

    • Verify Crews have located utilities for dig permit areas by performing walkdown on sites

    • Utilize utility map to ensure utilities are laid out

  • Attend Dig Permit meetings

    • Manage emergency requests and prioritize rush permits

    • Prepare requested dig permit sites and schedule crews for utility locates

    • Correlate with crews on completion of utility locates

Permit & Field Management:

  • Completion of dig permits

    • Oversee completion of utility locates and verify accuracy

    • Verify and sign electronic dig permits upon completion

    • Monitor and manage daily crew activities, ensuring compliance with company safety protocol

  • Hold trades accountable and reiterate the need for utility locates

    • Review as-builts and ensure utility maps are current and accurate with utilities layout

Strive to promote Zero Utility Strikes:

  • Direct and maintain crews’ responsibility and identify risks

  • Promote a Zero-utility strike culture through proactive communication planning and risk identification

  • Own the Dig Process is being followed exactly.

    • Own the Dig Process is being followed exactly

    • Hold trades accountable and reiterate the need for utility locates.

Crew Leadership:

  • Ensure crews activities to stretch and bend with Full PPE

  • Review that JHA’s completed with integrity and adhering to Weekly Toolbox Talks

  • Responsible for time entry allocated to correct job number in time keeping program

  • Promote Companies Core Values and strive to promote a positive cultural

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to perform physical labor (i.e., strenuous walking, and lifting catch basin grates/manhole covers, hauling equipment) and physically maneuver around construction sites, including accessing excavations, trenches, structures, and other disturbed areas; Capable of lifting and carrying 50 pounds
  • Capability to work by independently, be self-motivated, and have good organizational and communication skills and the ability to work directly with clients
  • Comply with all Construction Site OSHA Regulations
  • OSHA 30 Certified

Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Employment is contingent on the passing of a background check and drug screening

  • An understanding of utilities and basic construction knowledge of construction sites

  • Proven ability to manage conflict and provide solutions when necessary

  • Survey experience. Not required but beneficial

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft office software

  • Proven work history, strong work ethic, and team-player attitude
